The Canon EOS R, the first step in Canon's progression to mirrorless, combines an improved full-frame picture sensor with a newly built lens mount to create a distinctive and advanced multimedia camera system. The EOS R, which revolves around the new RF lens mount, is ready to be the tool for maximising a new line of lenses and optical advancements.

Regarding the camera itself, the EOS R has a DIGIC 8 image processor and a 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor with exceptional resolution. A wide sensitivity range up to a native ISO 40000, quick continuous shooting at 8 frames per second, and UHD 4K30 video recording are all made possible by the combination of these technologies. The sensor not only enables photography but also a sophisticated Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, which employs 5655 selectable points for swiftly and precisely obtaining focus. Additionally sensitive down to EV -6, its focusing technology can operate at astonishingly low light levels.

The UHD 4K video recording capabilities are completed with Movie Digital IS to reduce camera shake, built-in Canon Log gamma for a higher dynamic range, and 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 output through HDMI for even better colour management. The AF system is also ideally matched to these features.

In addition to its performance capabilities, this camera offers a high-resolution 3.69 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder for bright, crisp viewing at eye level. In contrast, a back 3.15 "Additionally included is a 2.1 million dot LCD touchscreen with a swivel design for working at high and low angles. A multi-Function bar that is configurable for conveniently modifying shooting settings satisfies the tactile needs as well. The magnesium alloy body is also dust and moisture-sealed because the camera was made to resist the harshest circumstances.

Canon RF Lens Mount

The EOS R is the first camera to accommodate Canon's series of RF-mount lenses, starting with a new lens mount. The broad 54mm diameter and close 20mm flange-back distance of this mount allow the development of lenses that are both quicker and more compact than their SLR equivalents. A 12-pin electrical contact system is also included into the mount for improved focusing and picture stabilisation. Through the use of an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter, this mount design also provides complete compatibility with existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses.

DIGIC 8 Image Processor and 30.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor

It has a large 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor, which strikes the perfect combination of high-resolution output, low-light capability, and fast processing speed. The EOS R offers a base sensitivity range of ISO 100–40000 when used with the DIGIC 8 image processor. This range may be increased to ISO 50–102400 for working in a variety of lighting scenarios. Moving subject photography is also enabled with quick continuous shooting up to 8 fps.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Similar to how a camcorder acquires focus, Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides a smooth and quick focusing performance. In order to eliminate focus hunting and offer a wide and dense network of 5655 phase-detection collection elements throughout most of the image sensor, this technology includes two independent photodiodes into each pixel. This allows for quicker, more precise control of focus placement. This focusing mechanism works to swiftly and precisely gain focus while dealing with still pictures, making it the perfect choice for shooting and tracking moving subjects so that crucial focus is reached with each frame. When recording video, the flexibility to control tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority allows for fluid and natural focusing when switching between various subjects or distances within the frame. Benefiting from the Touch AF technology, it is simple to adjust focus by touching objects in the scene on the touchscreen to shift focus in a natural way. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's capacity to distinguish subjects and keep focus while operating inside shifting or crowded landscape enhances subject tracking in movies as well. Additionally, the focus mechanism is sensitive down to EV -6 for precise AF performance in very low-light situations.

UHD 4K Video Recording and Canon Log Gamma

The UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 30 fps at 480 Mb/s, coupled with Full HD 1080p shooting at 60 fps and HD 720p at 120 fps for slow motion playback, are all supported by the EOS R, which is designed for multimedia image-makers. 4K video features an 8-bit colour depth when recorded in-camera, and a 4:2:2 10-bit clean output in ITU-R CT. When utilising an external recorder, 2020 is feasible.

Users may also take flat photos with an increased dynamic range of 800%, or 12 stops, using integrated Canon Log. This feature offers the most flexibility and possibilities for colour grading, as well as making it simpler to match cameras in post-production. A View Assist mode is offered for monitoring and simulates a graded look for more precise viewing on the LCD of the camera.

The onboard stereo microphone may be used to record audio, or the 3.5mm microphone connection can be used to connect an extra external microphone.

Dual-Pixel RAW

Dual Pixel RAW was first launched with the EOS 5D Mark IV and enables photographers to capture all the details the sensor's distinct pixel architecture can offer, allowing for precise edits to be done after the image has been captured. These modifications include focus fine-tuning, which enables you to slightly alter the focus point to emphasise additional details, move the bokeh for a better composition, and lessen the effects of ghosting on your photographs. Canon's Digital Photo Professional software is needed for this.

Body Design

• An integrated 3.69 million dot (0.71x magnification) OLED electronic viewfinder provides a bright and clear way for viewing at eye level.

• Rear 3.15 "For simpler usage when working from high, low, and front-facing angles, the 2.1m-dot LCD has a swivel design. Additionally, it has a touchscreen for simple filming, playback, and menu navigation.

• On the back of the camera, there is a customizable multi-function bar close to the viewfinder that can be configured to operate four different functions using the right, left, slide, and press buttons. It may be used to change movie shooting modes, employ flexible-priority AE, modify ISO or white balance, verify focus, show focus information, or change AF modes.

• The top panel features a dot-matrix LCD for rapid access to key camera settings.

• The UHS-II standard is supported in the one SD memory card slot, which allows for higher read and write rates to accommodate 4K video recording and rapid continuous shooting.

• A magnesium alloy body is lightweight, strong, and equipped with seals that are both water- and dust-resistant for usage in a range of weather situations.

• Wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with a compatible smart device are made possible via built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. This is done using the Canon Camera Connect app, which also offers geotagging your files using the location data from your mobile device.

• The LP-E6N rechargeable lithium-ion battery is already included, and the PD-E1 USB Power Adapter supports in-camera charging. This battery can take about 430 pictures on a single charge. The LP-E6 battery is also compatible with this camera, although in-camera charging is not supported.

Other Camera Features

• For better image quality, Digital Lens Optimizer helps to reduce the visibility of certain optical imperfections in-camera, including diffraction.

With the aid of multishot noise reduction technology, four consecutive exposures are recorded, and they are then combined in-camera to create a picture with softer tones and less noise, making it suitable for long exposure photos.

• Compact Raw (C-RAW /.CR3) files, which offer reduced file sizes for quicker post-processing, can be used to save images.

• Supported languages include English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Ukrainian, Norwegian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Hindi, Romanian, Turkish, Arabic, Thai, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Korean, Malay, Indonesian, and Japanese.
