The Canon EOS R3 combines the technology from their mirrorless EOS R system with the ruggedness and performance you'd expect from a flagship DSLR to create a camera designed for speed, adaptability, and dependability. The first 3-Series camera since the film period, the EOS R3 centres on a new full-frame stacked sensor, improved AF performance, and a revised body design. It establishes itself as a quick-firing, adaptable, and modern mirrorless camera.

The 24.1MP stacked sensor, which provides incredibly rapid readout speeds to assist eliminate rolling shutter distortion and benefit quick continuous shooting and video recording applications, is one of the most important innovations in the R3. A newer DIGIC X processor also benefits this full-frame BSI CMOS sensor by enhancing overall speed for up to 30 fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter, 6K 60p raw and 4K 120p video recording, and intelligent Dual Pixel CMOS II autofocus with Eye Control AF for simple focus point selection.

The R3 is also the first EOS R-series camera to include a built-in vertical grip, making it a comfortable option for extended shooting sessions and for fluidly moving between horizontal and vertical shooting configurations. A 5.76m-dot OLED EVF with excellent resolution and a 3.2-inch display are also part of the tough body design "Dual memory card slots, wireless and wired connection, a vari-angle touchscreen LCD, and a new Multi-Function Shoe design for more accessory compatibility.

Full-Frame Stacked Sensor and 24.1MP BSI Stacked CMOS Sensor DIGIC X Processor

The R3's stacked sensor architecture, a first for EOS cameras, encourages incredibly quick read-out rates to significantly lessen rolling shutter distortion and enabling quicker shooting performance. The back-illuminated architecture of its 24.1MP full-frame CMOS chip is also more effective at capturing light, which results in less noise, better clarity, and smoother colour reproduction, especially when operating in low-light situations.

Processor DIGIC X

With powerful processing and the capacity to carry out many high-speed activities at once, such as shooting at 30 frames per second while taking AF and AE readings before each frame, an improved DIGIC X completes the new sensor design. In order to function in a wide range of lighting circumstances, the processor also aids in realising a wide sensitivity range from ISO 100-102400, which is extensible to ISO 50-204800.

Automatic Shutter

One key advantage of the stacked sensor architecture is the highly functional electronic shutter, which can continuously shoot at up to 30 frames per second for up to 150 raw frames with essentially no rolling shutter distortion. The maximum shutter speed when using a manual or shutter-priority mode is 1/64,000 seconds, and flash sync is also feasible with an electronic shutter up to 1/180 seconds. Although this adaptable shutter function is by nature quiet, it may be combined with a variety of audible shutter noises to accompany each shutter click, making it simpler for subjects to know when a picture has been shot.

With a buffer of more than 1000 frames and a high flash sync speed of 1/250 second, a manual shutter is also an option. It has a maximum continuous shooting speed of 12 fps.

4K UHD and 6K RAW Video Recording

The 24MP full-frame sensor supports high-resolution 6K raw 12-bit internal recording as well as uncropped 4K 120p 10-bit recording with Canon Log 3. For oversampled DCI and UHD 4K shooting with better clarity, less moiré, and lower noise, both the 6K and 5.6K recording regions can be utilised. In-camera HDR creation and external HDR recording are both feasible with HDR-PQ recording. The HDMI connector provides a clear 4K output at up to 60 frames per second. There are choices for All-I, IPB, and IPB Light compression, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II may be used while shooting up to 6K raw. The R3 has both mic and headphone connectors, as well as a micro-HDMI Type-D port enabling clear output to an external recorder, and it is also capable of limitless recording durations.

Image stabilisation and autofocus
CMOS Dual Pixel AF II

The 1053 automated AF points in the upgraded Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology cover the whole sensor surface and provide faster, more responsive, and more accurate focusing performance. With the ability to intelligently recognise eyes, faces, heads (including helmets), animals, and vehicles, this upgraded phase-detection focusing system also has improved subject detection and tracking. Tracking will automatically lock onto these subjects and maintain sharp focus throughout burst captures. The low-luminance limit of Dual Pixel AF II has also been enhanced to focus as low as an amazing -7.5 EV for precise focusing even at night.

AF Eye Control

Canon is reintroducing Eye Control AF, which is new to EOS digital cameras, with the R3. This well-liked film-era feature has been improved upon and calibrated to function in tandem with Dual Pixel CMOS AF's intelligent focusing capabilities. Essentially, Eye Charge AF enables shooters to use their eye to initiate where the focus point is by just looking through the electronic viewfinder. The camera will then take control by using subject tracking and detection to keep the sighted target in crisp focus.

Image stabilisation with sensor shift

When used while shooting handheld in low light, an in-body image stabiliser (IBIS) corrects unintentional camera wobble. It also helps to lessen shaking when filming videos. Depending on the particular lens being used, this 5-axis system may also be utilised in conjunction with lenses that include optical image stabilisation to compensate for up to 8 stops of camera shake.

Body Design
EVF with 5.76m dots and an adjustable touchscreen LCD

Clear, high-resolution eye-level vision is provided by a stunning 5.76 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder. The stacked sensor architecture also benefits this 0.76x finder, which provides blackout-free viewing when used with an electronic shutter and offers a 120 fps refresh rate for accurate motion depiction. If requested, the extensive shooting information may be shown in the viewfinder's vast area, and the information display rotates with the camera for more comfortable viewing.

The EVF is joined by a 3.2 "There are also LCDs with variable angles that benefit from operating at high, low, and front-facing angles. A touchscreen interface and the remarkable 4.15 million dot resolution enable vivid playback and live view monitoring, complementing the flexible posture.

Professional-Grade Body Construction

The R3's strong and ergonomic body is fitted with an integrated vertical grip for better comfort when operating in either horizontal or vertical shooting positions, modelling its design after that of top DSLRs. The R3 has a similar back layout to the 1D X Mark III and R5 bodies and has both the smart controller and multi-controller from earlier EOS cameras for an intuitive handling experience. The high-capacity LP-E19 battery is also accommodated by the bigger body design, which is constructed with the same weather-sealed standards as the premium EOS-1D X Mark III.

Dual Memory Card Slots

For versatility in file storage, the EOS R3 offers two memory card slots: one CFexpress Type B slot and one UHS-II SD slot. For 6K video recording and quick continuous shooting, the CFexpress Type B slot should be favoured, while the SD slot is a practical substitute for backups or less speed-critical shooting.

Connectivity

There are several wired and wireless networking options, enabling a variety of ways to upload photographs, movies, and voice memo data. The camera has an RJ-45 connector and 1000BASE-T Ethernet interface for a quick and secure hardwired connection. 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be used for wireless transmission and remote camera control. When the device is linked to the R3 through USB, users of certain smartphones may also share files straight from the camera over 5G networks by using the mobile data on their handset.

Additionally, a built-in GPS module with GLONASS and QZSS compatibility is available for in-camera position tagging to simplify any geotagging and timestamp requirements.

Next-Generation Multi-Function Shoe

The Multi-Function Shoe is an improvement over a regular hot shoe that adds a row of pins to the front of the design to allow for broader accessory functionality and to supply power to some accessory types that often rely on separate batteries. For compatibility with older shoe-mounted attachments, this revised shoe is also compatible with the AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter, the ST-E10 Speedlite Transmitter, the DM-E1D Stereo Microphone, and the AD-P1 Smartphone Link Adapter.
