GoPro Hero 10 design is same |
The new camera offers a number of minor upgrades, which we'll discuss momentarily, but the big highlight is that everything just works better. There's a bigger sensor, 10-bit colour, and HyperSmooth 5.0 with 360-degree horizon lock.
This latest version has even more user-friendly features, like a new sensor format that makes it easier to shoot vertical video for platforms like Instagram, simplified settings, longer battery life, and more.
In addition, they've also released a new lighter version called the GoPro HERO 11 Black Mini, which is nearly as excellent as the original camera but lacks some capabilities like LCD panels.
GoPro Hero 11 Black: Hardware Upgrades
Let's first talk about the hardware upgrades in this GoPro Hero 11 black review guide.
The only thing that can be seen to be different between the Hero 10 Black from last year and the GoPro Hero 11 Black action camera from this year is the blue number on the side. The body is the same, so all your accessories, lens filters, mods, and add-ons will work with the Hero 11.
The new GoPro Hero 11 Black brings quite a few welcome changes to the Hero line. The new sensor is the greatest and most noticeable difference. It has a little vertical increase in size, giving it an aspect ratio of 8:7.
The Hero 11 is a better option for capturing the abhorrent vertical video than earlier versions that could shoot in 16:9 and 4:3, because to the new 8:7 aspect ratio. Because you can now shoot in 8:7, crop to vertical for sites that employ that monstrosity, and also crop to 16:9 for video sharing in a logical and rational way, it makes things simpler for Instagram reels and YouTube Shorts.
In addition, GoPro's HyperView feature, which is even wider-angle than the SuperView option in the Hero 10 model, is made possible by the bigger sensor. While effective in some confined circumstances—consider rock climbing, for example—the distortion at the corners is severe.
The other good news with the new sensor is that you can now extract 24.7-megapixel stills from your videos. Shoot videos so you don't miss anything and then using the Quik app or other tools to extract still photographs from the movie is one of the nicest things about a GoPro.
If you use the GoPro to take still pictures, the quality of those pictures goes up a little, from 23 megapixels in the Hero 10 to 27 megapixels in the GoPro. But the ability to shoot RAW images in burst mode is much more interesting for still photos. Before, burst only worked with JPEG files. The ability to shoot in RAW in this mode gives you another option for the situation above, where you want to end up with a still but also want to shoot continuously. Burst mode isn't video, so there's still a chance you'll miss that perfect moment. However, being able to develop a RAW image in RAW editing software makes up for some of that risk.
The Hero 10's video specifications are extremely similar to GoPro Hero 11. If you wish to capture high-resolution slow-motion recordings, the Hero 11 can record 5.3K video at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 frames per second, and 2.7K at up to 240 frames per second.
The Hero 11 now comes standard with GoPro's longer-lasting Enduro battery, which was previously an optional component. According to GoPro, the Enduro increases shot times by 38%. In my experience, your activities eventually influence the battery life. I was able to capture one hour and 13 minutes of video using the standard use case of filming in bright sunlight at 5.3K at 30 frames per second.
Compared to the ordinary battery that came with the Hero 10, which died far before the hour mark, this cell performs significantly better. There are various more ways to increase battery life, such as disabling GPS and Wi-Fi or putting on Extended Battery Mode, which lowers video quality. But hey, getting the clip at 5.3K 30 fps is preferable than missing it because 60 fps shooting destroyed your battery.
GoPro Hero 11 Black: Software Upgrades
Now its time to talk about the software upgrades in the latest GoPro Hero 11 black action camera.
You can now shoot in 10-bit colour with the GoPro Hero 11 Black Action Camera. When you shoot in a flat colour profile and do all of your colour toning in post-production, shooting in 10-bit colour gives you more dynamic range. In other words, 10-bit colour is most useful for people who like to edit video and fine-tune the colours in their post-production workflows.
The GoPro Hero 11 Black has a new Star Trails feature, If you've ever tried to take pictures of star trails, you know how hard it is to stack hundreds of pictures. This probably blows your mind: With a single button press, the Hero 11 can make a perfect video of a star trail. Again, it's still useful to be able to pull out a 24 megapixel.
Other new software modes include a Light Painting mode for having fun with a flashlight and a Vehicle Light Trails feature for quickly transforming nighttime car lights into rivers of white and red.
The GoPro now has two modes: Easy and Pro, continuing with the premise of requiring the user to do less effort. For those who aren't willing to go further into the GoPro's colour settings and other finer points, the camera arrives in Easy mode, which offers a simpler interface. It's simple to switch to Pro, which is the well-known GoPro interface, whether you're a pro or are just accustomed to the previous UI.
More control over Auto Highlights footage is a good feature that isn't only tied to the Hero 11 (in fact, it works with all GoPros dating back to the Hero 5). You do have to enable Auto Upload and be a GoPro member.
As soon as you do, the Quik app will create modifications and add them to your Quik app instantly. That much isn't new, but GoPro just made it possible to edit Auto Highlight videos without having to download the original files to your phone. You'll end up editing a low-res proxy, but it will deliver the high-res version when you export or share to another app. The primary issue I have with Quik is that it's simply too much for my phone, but theoretically this would fix that.
Create brushstroke effects with moving light, like a headlamp waved or fireworks, using long exposure pictures. Using Vehicle Light Trails you can place your GoPro in the middle of a busy street or on a bridge above a highway, press the button, and watch as the headlights of passing vehicles burn themselves into your image.

Is it Worth Upgrading?
You've almost finished reading our GoPro HERO 11 review and are going to decide whether to invest now or save your money for later. So if you have an older version already? Is it worth upgrading to the HERO11?
Here is the advice we give to our closest friends and family members if they are looking to get their first GoPro and are unsure if this is the model to choose: Yes, it’s 100% worth buying the HERO11.
This model is quite close to being one of the greatest travel cameras available, regardless of your preferred style, whether it's general travel, action sports, lifestyle, underwater (remember it's waterproof to 10m), or creating YouTube movies. Anyone who considers themselves to be a beginner in photography or videography is also in luck. Using a GoPro has never been simpler or more pleasant thanks to Easy Controls and high-quality built-in image processing.
If you currently own a HERO9 or an older model, such as the HERO 8 or HERO 7, and are debating whether it's time to update, our recommendation is that you do so immediately. The HERO11 elevates the storied cameras to a whole new level, and when combined with the GP2 CPU, it makes the earlier models seem like a thing of the past. When compared to the 9, it's essentially a completely new camera, and if you're coming from the 7 or 8, you'll be glad you finally made the switch to the 11.
Don't get irritated and throw away a GoPro Hero 10 that you just happened to purchase. Although still a fantastic camera, it is more about imagination than equipment as long as you are having fun going out and creating content.
